Bunion Treatment

Bunion Treatment

As the colder weather season approaches, many of us will begin to wear more enclosed shoes and the prominent bone at the great toe joint or bunion may begin to rub and cause more pain. The condition is generally hereditary but does become progressiverly worse over time. Due to the deformity being related to bone structure, conservative treatment is limited and consists of change in shoes or padding.

Advances in bunion surgical treatment now generally allow the ability to walk on the surgicallly treated foot the same day of surgery and allow return to a regular shoe in about 4 weeks. The initial treatment generally consists of a walking surgical boot during the 4 weeks. Because bunions are progressive, the earlier they are addressed, the less involved the treatment and quicker healing. The latest bunion techniques now involved consist of minimal incisions.
