The Proper Way to Care for Your Feet

The Proper Way to Care for Your Feet

Here’s our helpful guide for caring and maintaining healthy feet.

The average American takes 3,000-4,000 steps a day. Our feet work hard for us each and every day, and yet we often abuse them. We pound the pavement, wear worn-out tennis shoes to play sports and shove our feet into sky-high heels. Believe it or not, there are right and wrong ways to care for your feet. From the office of our Carmel and Indianapolis, IN, foot doctor Dr. Jeffrey Agricola, here are some helpful tips for keeping your feet healthy,

Wash Feet Daily

It’s necessary for everyone to wash their feet daily with soap and warm water. Make sure to wash all parts of your feet including between the toes. Once you hop out of the shower, you should dry your feet off thoroughly.

Keep Feet Moisturized

Once you dry your feet off it’s a good idea to apply a moisturizer. While you may only do this during the winter months when feet are more likely to be dry, you should moisturize every day. Moisturizing daily can prevent dry, cracked skin that can lead to infections. If you are prone to dry feet, you may wish to moisturize more than once a day.

Wear Proper Footwear

Whether you are on your feet all day for work or you’re a runner, it’s important that you are wearing the appropriate shoes for your daily activities. Those who are on their feet all day will want to choose shoes with breathable material that don’t bunch up toes and will provide ample support. You may also want to be fitted for athletic footwear to make sure that you are getting shoes that will protect your feet while they are working their hardest.

Trim Nails Regularly

It’s important that you also know how to properly trim and maintain your toenails. Every few weeks you’ll want to make sure to trim your toenails, so they are level with the tips of the toes. Also, make sure to trim nails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. If you are unable to trim your toenails yourself, our Carmel and Indianapolis, IN, foot doctor can do it for you.
