What is Causing My Heel Pain?

Find out what might be causing your heel pain and what you can do about it.heel pain

It’s amazing how quickly your whole day comes to a standstill when you are in pain. Heel pain is a common complaint our Carmel and Indianapolis, IN podiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Agricola treats, but it’s important that you understand what might be going on and when it’s time to seek professional medical care for your heel pain.

Causes of Heel Pain

There are so many possible causes of heel pain that it’s difficult to pinpoint it without coming in for an evaluation. Of course, the two most common causes are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

These are both inflammatory foot conditions that often come about from overuse. Both are common problems for athletes, particularly runners. If you’ve suddenly increased the intensity or duration of your workout or running regimen and heel pain surfaces not long after, then plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis could be to blame.

Other causes of heel pain include:

  • Bursitis (inflammation of one or more joints in the foot)
  • Heel spurs
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Arthritis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Neuropathy
  • Bone tumor (rare)
  • Ruptured tendon

When to See a Doctor

While minor pain may leave as quickly as it comes about, it’s important to understand when it’s time to turn to our Indianapolis foot doctor for professional treatment. Sometimes you may be able to get away with treating the problem from the comfort of your own home; however, if you are dealing with severe pain or swelling, if you have difficulty moving the foot, or if you also have weakness, numbness or tingling in the heel then you need to visit us right away.

While not as urgent, you should schedule an appointment with us if your heel pain is persistent and lasts more than a couple of weeks (even with at-home care), or if heel pain lingers even at rest.

Prestige Podiatry offers comprehensive foot care services to the Indianapolis, Carmel and Greenwood, IN, areas. If heel pain is getting to you and you can’t seem to get your symptoms under control then give us a call.
