Long Term Effects Of Bunions

Long Term Effects Of Bunions

Bunions are bony protrusions on the side of the foot that often cause intense discomfort and pain. If not treated promptly, there can be several long term effects of bunions, such as chronic pain and difficulty walking. Dr. Jeffrey Agricola, the experienced podiatrist at Prestige Podiatry in Indianapolis and Carmel, IN, utilizes several methods to treat bunions.

What Causes Bunions?

Bunions often develop after the joint at the base of the big toe becomes dislocated. This joint is called the metatarsophalangeal joint. When the joint is out of place, the big toe slants toward the smaller ones causing the bony end of the joint to slant in the opposite direction and press up against the side of the foot. The end of the joint forms a bony protrusion or bunion.

Many different factors can cause the metatarsophalangeal toe joint to become dislocated. One common cause is wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow and cause the toes to be cramped together. An injury to the toes or foot can also result in dislocation of the toe joint and the eventual development of bunions. Additional causes include arthritis or another medical condition, as well as a structural deformity of the foot.

Long Term Effects of Bunions

There can be several long term adverse effects of bunions, which is why it is so important to see a podiatrist for treatment. Delaying treatment can cause additional problems. Over time, bunions can grow larger and become more inflamed and painful. At that point, conservative treatments might not be as effective and surgery might be needed. Other long term effects of bunions include:

  • Ongoing pain and discomfort
  • Walking becomes more difficult
  • The skin on the bottom of the foot can become thicker
  • Hammertoe or another toe deformity can develop
  • Arthritis or bursitis can develop over time
  • Friction can rub the skin raw and lead to infection

Bunion Treatments

Bunions do not go away on their own and can become worse so it is best to seek treatment. The skilled podiatrist at our offices in Indianapolis and Carmel, IN, offers several options for treating bunions. Bunion treatment could include one of more of the following methods:

  • Wearing shoes with enough room to accommodate the bunion and not irritate it
  • Orthotic devices to correct foot position and stabilize the toe joint
  • Foot exercises to improve joint mobility and function and prevent stiffness
  • Placing protective padding inside the shoes to reduce friction
  • Wearing splints while sleeping to realign the toe joint
  • Removing corns and calluses on the feet
  • Bunion surgery (bunionectomy)
