Treating Your Bunions

Treating Your Bunions

Bunions are a bone deformity that ends up as a large lump of extra bone jutting out on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe. This often happens because of irregular foot structures and usually isn’t painful but can be irritating to deal with. If you have bunions, you may want to know how you can manage any symptoms or get rid of your bunions completely. Dr. Jeffrey Agricola at Prestige Podiatry in Indianapolis and Carmel, IN, can explain how you can treat your bunions and ease any symptoms you may have.

Treating Your Bunions

While there is no way to get rid of bunions without surgery, there are ways to ease some of the irritation that you may experience from bunions. Bunions can get sore if you’ve been on your feet for a while or you may get blisters from them rubbing against the side of your shoes. Your podiatrist in Indianapolis and Carmel, IN, can suggest some treatments for your bunions so you aren’t in as much pain.

You can use protective padding on the sides of your feet and wear shoes that have extra room in the toes to help prevent any rubbing from happening. Orthotic devices can also help stabilize your joints and keep your feet in the correct positions so they don’t become as sore. Night splints can also help align the joints and keep the toes aligned.

In severe cases, the only option may be surgery. This is when the bunion is shaved down and the foot is realigned to the proper position.
